The Davis County Commission is a 3-member body that represents all of Davis County—with nearly 380,000 residents. The county commission makes administrative, legislative, and executive decisions for Davis County, working closely with local and state leaders.
County commissioners oversee many county departments and work with local clerks, auditors, and sheriffs, and help manage natural resources and infrastructure on county land. Commissioners also create legislation for the county. Their budget comes from property taxes.
You can see the specific assignments of each of the three current commissioners here.
Davis County Commission Seat B comes down to Bret Millburn (unaffiliated) and Susan Lee (Republican).
We resoundingly recommend voting for unaffiliated candidate Bret Millburn for this seat. Mr. Millburn brings deep experience, having previous served on the county commission from 2007–2018. He’s also worked in the state auditor’s office. Among his priorities are fiscal responsibility, economic development, public safety, and transportation. We believe that the experience and independence he would bring to this role are vital.
That’s particularly true since the county commission has been in a period of turmoil since last year, as a result of Commissioner John Crofts’ actions. Those actions spurred an independent investigation, resulting in Crofts being censured and removed from the commission chair role and supervisory responsibilities this July. Since Crofts can’t be forced out of the commission, we need someone who can hit the ground running as the third member of the commission. That’s Mr. Milburn. (Read why he entered the race—one reason being “People are fed up with the parties,” he said. “They’re fed up with the extremes. The average citizen is not represented anymore.”).
Susan Lee (R), the Republican contender for this seat, has a degree in accounting and has served on the Kaysville City Council and Power Commission. She’s been very active in local Republican party leadership and as president of the county GOP’s Lincoln Club. Our experience is that these groups tend to be highly partisan and extreme, and expect Ms. Lee to be the same.
She is running to protect conservative principles, protect taxpayers, strengthen our communities, and promote smart growth. She has, at least in the past, openly endorsed the MAGA movement, and we believe shares the views of her son Trevor Lee, who ran many culture war bills in the legislature before resigning amid recent fraud allegations. While we do not know Ms. Lee personally, Network members have not found that many culture warriors (like Mr. Crofts and Ms. Lee) prioritize the needs of their constituents and govern wisely.
